Officer Wellness Day

A Friday for YOU designed by Officers for Officers…

Come join us for a Wellness & Self Care Day! This is for officers and their spouses.

We are offering numerous self-care and educational modalities to allow you to gain new insight and awareness into ways to support YOU and your family. This event will provide rotating sessions that you will get to choose from. There will be equine-assisted therapy, family life, officer self-care, mindfulness, relationships, yoga, trauma and financial health. This training has been deemed eligible for AZ POST continuing education credits. We are providing breakfast, lunch and snacks and free chair massages. There will be a raffle for fun gifts!

General Session: Officer Wellness by Sgt. Mike Carleton Tempe PD: Mike has 19 years of experience on Tempe PD’s Peer Support/CISM team and has served as a team leader for the past 10 years. During this session Mike will discuss the effects of critical incident trauma and cumulative stress facing first responders.  He will discuss some techniques for self-care and review the current ARS statutes related to peer support and the officer bill of rights.

Attendees are able to select 3 sessions out of the following:

Equine Assisted Experience by Angela Schmitt: Angela has a master’s in counseling and works with a variety of populations utilizing animal assisted therapies. This session will lead you through an interactive session with her horses.  “There is nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.” Winston Churchill

Family Life by Laura Magnuson: Laura is a daughter of a retired police officer and a licensed therapist. During this session she will speak about the perspective of the child growing up in a LEO family, compassion fatigue, and the mental health needs of LEO children to include suicide prevention and resources.

Financial Wellness: Robert Ferraro is the president of the Tempe Officer Association and prior to his career in law enforcement worked in the financial department on Wall Street. During this session the presenters will discuss challenges officers face and guidance related to financial matters.

Trauma: During this session the clinician will share insights and experiences about Trauma as well as how trauma impacts the brain. Learn some techniques on how to move forward with experiencing ongoing trauma.

Yoga: No previous yoga experience needed.  Relax, stretch, learn how to breath and slow things down.  Attendees will receive a complimentary yoga mat courtesy of Cigna.

Spouse/relationship-by Iva Rody. Iva is the program manager of the 100 Club and a spouse of an officer. In her session she will share the perspective of what it’s like to be the spouse of a LEO and challenges and successes in the relationship dynamic.
